Today is World Autism Awareness Day. I had no idea this day even existed until today. Last week our oldest daughter, Penelope, who is now 12 years old, was diagnosed with autism. For years my wife, Anna, and I suspected something was a little different about her. A few months ago we started reaching out for advice from friends whose children were autistic. After learning what autism is, we consulted some doctors and began testing. Our family is very encouraged to now know and understand what she has so we can be able to help her in her everyday life.
Penelope is a kind, caring soul who now understands why she struggles in some aspects of her life. However, she also knows that the Lord has made her uniquely special and for a purpose. We’re comforted knowing that God’s love and grace is sufficient for us. Our love and prayers go out to all those who have autism and to those who have a loved one who faces it on a daily basis.
